Selling of Chometz

The sale of Chometz is an integral part of the traditional Passover preparation.

Jewish law prohibits both the consumption and the possession of Chometz during Passover. Since it is virtually impossible to dispose of all Chometz prior to Passover, it is customary practice to arrange for its sale by an agent appointed by the individual family.

This is a legal transaction, which is arranged by the Rabbi. By assigning the Rabbi as your agent, you give the buyer all rights of ownership over the Chometz that will be sold to him/her.

After Passover, The Rabbi, as agent, repurchases the Chometz.

The sale of Chometz must be attended to by the day before Passover, by 10:00am. For those who cannot see the Rabbi in person, we provide a form, which must be filled out, signed and received at the congregation two days earlier.
